Grand Canyon Rescue
We were hiking in the Grand Canyon and watched a helicopter rescue of an injured hiker. The helicopter approached and landed and then dropped off some EMT's who hiked down to the location of the hiker. They put him in a basket and transferred him back to the landing spot where they put the basket into the helicopter and took him to the hospital. In some of the photos you can see the basket with the hiker and an EMT suspended under the helicopter on the way back to the landing spot. From the time of the helicopter approaching until they got the hiker back to the landing spot was about 3 hours. Found the following story on the internet: Colorado Man Rescued After Grand Canyon Fall
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) ―
National Park Service officials have rescued a Colorado man who fell on his head during a hike in the Grand Canyon.
NPS spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge says the 60-year-old Boulder man was climbing in a drainage off a popular trail about two miles below the South Rim on Sunday morning when he fell a short distance and landed on his head.
One of his hiking companions called 911 and told dispatchers that the man appeared to be disoriented.
A park helicopter lowered a rescuer on a fixed line; the rescuer was attached to the man and the two were flown to a landing spot.
Another helicopter took the man to Flagstaff Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Oltrogge declined to say what the man's condition was.
